I was saddened to read in the Oct. 31 edition of the Record-Courier of the plan to eliminate 95 full-time equivalent positions at Robinson Memorial-Summa Hospital. What a tragic loss to the community! Although upper management states that "it is important we do nothing to impact patient care" a question comes to mind. If the hospital's mission is to provide patient care, what were those 95 positions involved with if it were not patient care? Administrative, clerical, maintenance, security and other staff all affect patient care. The R-C article further states that it is necessary to reduce "operating expenses immediately." It would be useful to know how much of the operating costs are related to the new $13 million Robinson-Summa facility in Streetsboro and which organization is being saddled with the majority of these costs? As I stated in an earlier R-C letter, "Portage, Summit, and Medina counties are being liberally sprinkled with new healthcare buildings." Alliances and controlling interests in these hospitals and health care facilities do not always add up to better health care, better management or lower costs. Bigger is not always better as the mess in the banking industry has proven. Banks attempt to retain and grow customers through new branch locations. New hospitals, medical and wellness centers are a similar approach to retaining clients. Has construction of yet another building improved health care in Streetsboro or merely prevented a few more potential clients from leaving the area to meet their medical needs? A large and powerful provider of medical care and insurance (conflict of interest?) is now exerting its influence through out the three-county area. Caution is needed to assure that the big and mighty do not overwhelm and potentially mismanage quality and local medical service. For example, with the average occupancy of the six area hospitals at less than 60 percent, is there really a need for constructing a new hospital on S.R. 8? Important things that could and should be done with the money saved would be to train and develop better managers while hiring more physicians and nurses. Robert D. Smith Stow Comments
