The Portage County HAZMAT team responded Saturday to a spill of 10,000 gallons of aluminum chlorohydrate at the Akron Water Treatment Plant on Ravenna Road in Franklin Township just after 9 p.m.
Two employees at the plant were transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna with “very, very minor injuries,” said Capt. John Tosko of the Kent Fire Department.
Tosko said the spill was contained to the inside of the plant.
He said the liquid chemical spill was caused when a pipe burst inside the plant.
“They shut the plant down, but they have roughly 18 hours of water, so they won’t run out of water,” Tosko said.
The chemical, used to deodorize water, is not toxic, he added.
About a dozen members of the Kent Fire Department responded, in addition to an unknown number members of the HAZMAT team.
The spill cleanup was turned over to a private contractor around 10 p.m. — also when traffic on Ravenna Road was re-opened.

Hmmm... for a "non-toxic" spill it sure seems like they took extreme measures rather quickly. Of course our totally honest local politicos would never try to allay fears by downplaying the severity of the situation!?!?
