Questions Kent snow removal law

Share_email E-mail Story    |    Share_print Print Story    |    Comments    |

Last year, the Ohio Supreme Court pooh-poohed silly city ordinances such as fining people for failure to remove snow from private property. I understand it is unlawful to punish Ohio citizens for such petty violations.

However, Kent’s service director, Gene Roberts, wants taxpayers in our town to be fined $100 to $300 if refusing, or unable, to remove said snow.

I ask: What pleasure could Roberts derive from picking on the very people who pay his outrageous salary and put food on his table?

Could this be, as Yogi Berra said, “Deja vu all over again” — our annual pre-winter empty threats from Kent City Hall?

Personally, after mailing this letter, I’m going to grease my snow shovel — if I can stop shaking from fear long enough.

(Editor’s note: Kent City Council recently approved a new section in the city’s codified ordinance to create a civil offense when a property owner or snow plow contractor clears a driveway or parking lot but blocks a sidewalk or pedestrian crossing in the process. Violating the new ordinance can lead to an initial fine of $100 that could escalate to $300.) e

Theophilus, if you, too, decide to follow Mr. Craven's handy household tip, remember to grease the blade, not the handle.

Yours truly,

Kent Sheetz

Not my comment at #6. It's the work of conservative Republican dirty trick artist, the Record-Courier Faker.

At least he's no longer frightening women and small children with his creepy Rumpelstilzchen persona!

Please note that he subsequently changed his online name from Rumpelstilzchen to Rutgers Jan Linklaen (and may change it again).

I would guess that the unsigned letter (A lesson to be learned from California) he is responding to, sadly, is his own.

Record Courier,

Please correct the similar sign on names of "Kent Sheetz" or at least post a notice saying that this will not be done.

Thanks.

Fair Tax 1, you are absolutely correct.

I am thinking that High Holy Grand Poo-Bah is the presumptive mayor-elect of this fair city!

The way I see it, this law is intended at businesses with big parking lots. Not the little old lady in a house.
This is a great idea.
It is too bad that laws like this need to be made. There should be more personal responsibility.
Yes - another cost of doing business in the big city.

From all this I learned that putting grease on a snow shovel sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the tip Mr. Craven!

Mr. Craven, Fair Tax, can we agree that Big Boy would make a dandy Mayor of Streetsboro?

Yours truly,
Kent Sheetz

Fair Tax, you're good with numbers, right? How does a droll response to a droll letter, that alludes to another droll letter written by the same gentleman, add up to a personal attack? It just sounds like a whole lot of drollery to me!

Kent's next mayor?
March 6, 2009

A little local history about downtown Kent: When I was a kid, Fred Bechtle ran a news stand and cigar shop on South Water Street, across from what is now Woodsy's Music. Fred was a gentleman and looked the part, with his high, stiff-collared shirts, vests, always a suit and tie and polished, patent-leather shoes.

Fred owned an ornate cigar store Indian that stood in front of the store during business hours but went inside at closing time with Fred's help.

Fred went to his just reward many years ago. I'm not sure about the Indian, but if given the opportunity to do so, I would nominate Fred Bechtle's wooden Indian to be our next mayor.

Man I am truly angry about the high dollar amounts of the fines. From reading the minutes our city council never discussed the dollar amount of the fines. This council is so out of touch.

KS there you go again attacking somebody's character instead of the issue at hand. You must be unable to debate a point so you resort to personal attacks of those you don't agree with or cry about your username being hijacked.

Isn't Mr. Craven the gentleman who suggested that he would vote for a cigar store Indian for mayor?

Perhaps the cigar store Indian could shovel Mr. Craven's sidewalk.
