'Victory Garden' lives anew in Kent

Share_print Print Story    |    Comments    |

I had to smile when I read Roger Di Paolo's column (Portage Pathways, Record-Courier, Nov. 15 ) that a World War II Victory Garden had been planted at one time beside the Kent Hotel. Almost 60 years later there was another "victory garden" this past summer in the spot across from that hotel. Several different vegetables were admired (and harvested?) by passers-by. The plot has been cleared for fall and what remains is a border of bright marigolds -- at least until a hard frost.

I'm sure many were surprised or even perplexed to see a well-groomed garden in downtown Kent. I think it served as a bold recognition and encouragement of the increasing interest in local, home and backyard gardening. According to one survey nearly 40 percent of homeowners grow at least some vegetables because of concerns about food quality, price and freshness.

Three cheers to the sponsors for reminding us of the values and benefits of vegetable gardening with this attractive and creative public demonstration.
