As part of Kent's Thanksgiving tradition, the community is invited to the 41st annual Thanksgiving Brunch Bunch Charity Fund-Raising Auction from 8 a.m. to noon Thanksgiving Day at the Kent American Legion Post, 1945 Mogadore Road. The Brunch Bunch live auction helps raise money to benefit Kent Social Services, Center of Hope, The Lord's Pantry and Coleman Adult Day Services food projects. Admission is only $3 for an endless supply of coffee, doughnuts, cider, fun and laughter, but, most importantly, it is a great opportunity to help feed those in need. The committee is accepting monetary donations and/or items to be auctioned at the event. Donations can be dropped off at Hall Green Agency at 146 N. DePeyster St. in Kent; Portage Community Bank at 1532 S. Water St. in Kent or at their Ravenna location at 1311 E. Main St.; or contact Michelle Hartman at 330-815-4315, and we will arrange to pick up your donation. What better way to get a jump on your Christmas shopping? Consider this: You can get a lovely meal and great deals on unique gifts from the auction on Thursday, then you can actually sleep in on Friday. While all the other people are standing outside big box stores in the cold at 5 a.m., you can giggle contentedly in your snuggly warm bed. Now, on a more philanthropic level, by beginning the holiday season thinking of others ahead of ourselves, our celebrations are made more meaningful. I hope that you will be able to carve time out of your day, before you carve your turkeys, to come to the Brunch Bunch Auction. ------ Speaking of turkeys, did you ever draw a "hand turkey?" Probably you have. Did you ever get a cookie as a reward for drawing a hand turkey? Probably you have not. Stahl's Bakery in Kent is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. This is a tremendous accomplishment, especially in our current economy. As a special community thank-you, the baker, Cary, is inviting the community to come in this week and make or bring a hand turkey to decorate the walls of the bakery. Each person who brings in a decoration will receive a turkey-shaped "cut-out" cookie. One cookie per person, of course. All ages (and cities of residence) are welcome. She has one that was made by a 74-year-old man. No worries, she has paper and crayons on site. The cookies are delicious. She is also offering specials to people who sign up for her e-mail newsletter, so feel free to do that when you stop by the bakery. It is located in the FedEx/Kinko's Plaza on East Main Street between Lincoln and Willow streets, near Kent State University. Stahl's Bakery prides itself on using the Stahl family's traditional recipes, fresh doughs and fine ingredients. Seriously, the cookies are delicious. The muffins and cakes are good, too. ------ Artists, architects, and fans of Frank Lloyd Wright will want to meet author and illustrator Cara Armstrong at an open house book signing event at Logos Bookstore in Kent this evening. Cara graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent in 1987 and is now the curator of education at Frank Lloyd Wright's "Fallingwater." She has just written a children's book about a clever dachshund named Moxie who takes readers on an exuberant romp through Frank Lloyd Wright's masterwork house. The book is entitled "Moxie, the Dachshund of Fallingwater." The book's stylish star and narrator is Moxie, one of seven long-haired dachshunds who live at the acclaimed house. The litter of dachshunds, whose names all begin with letter "M," is loosely based on the long-haired dachshunds that lived at Fallingwater during the 1930s and '40s when the house was owned by the Kaufmann family. Liliane Kaufmann raised several litters of dogs at the "Big House," as Fallingwater was once called. In the book, Moxie proudly points out sources of inspiration for Frank Lloyd Wright's design and introduces readers to Fallingwater's many remarkable features, such as its dramatic cantilevers, horizontal lines and exquisite details. Moxie and her canine companions also take readers on a dive into the plunge pool and a tour past the Bear Run waterfall over which Fallingwater is built. With a special glossary that defines architectural terms, "Moxie, the Dachshund of Fallingwater" teaches new concepts and stirs creativity even as it delights readers. The book explains some of the key concepts that influenced the house's design in a friendly, casual style that appeals to children and adults alike. "I wanted to make the topic of architecture in general, and Fallingwater in particular, accessible and fun," said Armstrong. She will be at Logos from 4 to 7 tonight. Logos is located at 976 W. Main St., Kent. The book will be available after the event as well. ------ As we prepare for Thanksgiving next week, I want to mention how thankful I am for my family, friends, our business, and this community. Kent is a special town and I am really grateful to call it home. Thank you so much. ------ Contact Ann Kardos with your Kent news at 330-931-9420 or ann@kentlogos.com. Comments
