Four people — three of them Kent State University students — have been arrested and charged in connection with the early-Sunday morning robbery of two students on campus.

According to a statement released by the university, students Jose F. Lino of Akron, Daejshon D. Norton of Erie, Pa. and Mykel B. Benson of Cleveland were identified and arrested thanks to a tip from a KSU student and campus surveillance systems.

The three students are 18 years old. The fourth suspect, who is not a KSU student, is a juvenile whose name is not being released because of his age.

“The men arrested in this incident are not representative of our student body,” KSU President Lester Lefton said. “Kent State students are law abiding, hard working and great representatives of the many communities from which they hail.”

Lino is an aeronautics major. Norton is listed as an exploratory major, and Benson as a zoology major, according to KSU’s online student directory.

Sunday’s incident took place at 3:17 a.m. in the Commons area north of the KSU Art Building, and did not involve any weapons. The victims in the incident received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

According to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office and KSU, Norton, Benson and Lino were arrested late Monday evening and early Tuesday morning. All three currently are charged with one count each of receiving stolen property, all fifth-degree felonies.

The three men were arraigned Tuesday in Portage County Municipal Court in Ravenna via video from the Portage County jail. Judge Barbara Oswick set a 10 percent of $10,000 bond for each man, with the condition that they not have contact with Rosie’s Diner, a KSU campus eatery.

If convicted on the current charges, each man faces between six and 12 months in prison and up to $2,500 in fines and court costs, Oswick said.

Additional charges may be pending. Preliminary hearings for all three suspects are set beginning at 9:15 a.m. Dec. 4 in Portage County Municipal Court in Kent.

“The success of the arrests was a joint effort between our police department and our students who stepped up to provide tips, including the one that ultimately led to these arrests. I appreciate the efforts of the community, in particular our students, to get involved and watch out for each other,” Lefton said.

The university said KSU police “will continue to have an increased presence around campus to ensure everyone’s safety.”

According to FBI statistics, KSU’s Kent campus is one of the safest in Ohio and the region.

KSU police Det. Lt. Christopher Jenkins on Tuesday referred all questions to KSU’s office of University Communications and Marketing.

These boys made a mistake. That does not make them bad people, nor does it give people the right to judge them. Also, where they were raised has nothing to do with what happened. There are plenty of well off, suburban kids who break the law as well.

Now what about the other ARMED robberies from the weekend in Kent. Seems the KSU Police handled this case but why can't the Kent Police seem to do anything about the safety of the KSU students living off campus? Why aren't the robberies at gun point of laptops and gaming systems being reported on?

If they are KSU students, then they do represent KSU.
Just like any other student's actions do.
But of course no one would think a few thugs are the norm for all students. Well dah Lefton. But why did those few decided to be robbers?
Maybe the pres should put together some touchie feelie group to examine why those turds decided to rob instead of study.

So glad the KSU PD acted so quickly.

Great job!!!!!

UNCF in action. You can give them money, and inflate their entrance scores to eek them through the acceptance phase, but you can't give them a brain.

First, I am trying to figure out mrm4814's comment about how these thugs are Republicans. Blaming a political party for this terible crime never crossed my mind.

I am glad that these guys were caught. My daughter is a student at Kent State and I have been on pins and needles about the recent crimes on campus. Her safety and the safety of others are a huge concern to myself and other parents.

It seemed that these guys had good careers ahead of them but now they will find it very hard to find a job with a felony. Such a shame to waste one's life. Why do people want to rob others and not work for the things they want? It is a sad world we live in.

Too bad they totally blew it on a great opportunity to make something of themselves.

My temptation would be to say: "You can take the thug out of the 'hood, but not the 'hood out of the thug..."

But that would be presuming they came from the "bad" neighborhoods in their respective hometowns of Akron, Cleveland, and Erie, PA. Although I'm not aware of any "great" neighborhoods in those cities.

Perhaps it was just the MTV Gangsta Rap mentality that made these scholars go astray.

State prison is no picnic. Now they get to live out their fantasy.
