By Dave O’Brien Record-Courier staff writer The Kent Fire Department is investigating an early morning house fire at 492 Laurel Drive on the city’s west side that caused significant fire and smoke damage to the vacant residence this week. Kent Fire Chief James Williams said the call came in at 4:38 a.m. Tuesday. The house has been vacant for approximately one year, he said, and no one was injured in the blaze. The house suffered “significant” fire damage at the rear of the structure, and heavy smoke damage throughout the basement and second floor. Firefighters also had to cut holes in the second floor to check for fire moving through the structure, Williams said. The cause is still under investigation, he said. “We were back out there (Wednesday), looking at additional things. We took some samples and sent them to the lab, so it could be a couple weeks before we have a confirmed cause on the fire,” Williams said. There currently is not a damage estimate for the house or its contents, Williams said, pending insurance claims. The Brimfield, Ravenna and Stow fire departments also responded to the blaze, Williams said. Laurel Drive is on Kent’s west side, south of West Main Street. The Portage County Auditor’s online property records list the one-and-a-half story, single-family dwelling as being built in 1941. It has a listed value of $113,900, according to the auditor’s office.
