Blustery weather ushers in the cold: Wind downs branches, trees in Portage

Winter temperatures blew into Portage County starting Wednesday afternoon with gusts hitting in the 50 mph range.

Temperatures dropped throughout the day from the low 50s Wednesday and are expected to be in the teens tonight.

Several trees and numerous branches were reported downed by the winds. One tree hit a car in a driveway on Wayne Road in northern Mantua Township Wednesday evening.

In Paris, a tree was reported down on a house.

In Streetsboro, a parking lot light pole was reported knocked down by wind. No other damage was reported.

Trees fell Wednesday afternoon on Infirmary Road in Shalersville just north of the Portage County Justice Center, on S.R. 305 in Nelson and on Hartville Road in Randolph. 

Wires were reported down in a yard in the 6200 block of Washington Street in Brady Lake.

No major problems were reported by police or fire departments around the county.

The National Weather Service reported gusts topped out at 61 mph at 12:29 p.m. Wednesday at Akron-Canton Airport. The next-highest gusts were recorded at 56 mph at 12:25 p.m. in Akron.
