New Year baby took his time; Boy born to Streetsboro mom after 30 hours of laborJanuary 3, 2010
By Diane Smith Record-Courier staff writer Kolton Ty Broman took his time coming into the world. The first baby of the new year was born at 3:17 p.m. Friday, almost a week past his due date and more than 30 hours after his parents arrived at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. “He’s healthy, and that’s all we can ask for,” said mom Toshia Bachtel. Bachtel and Gregory Broman of Streetsboro also are the parents of another son, Austin Broman, who is only one year and three days older than his brother. Because of the hospital’s flu precautions, the brothers still have not met. The boy is spending time with his grandmother while mom is in the hospital. Bachtel said Broman brought his son a video of his little brother “but he didn’t show much interest in it.” Kolton’s due date was Dec. 26, and when that date passed, the couple arrived at Robinson early Thursday morning to be induced. However, when New Year’s Eve came and went without labor progressing, the boy was born by caesarian the following afternoon. He weighed 7 pounds, 7.1 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. The family received gifts from its doctor and from the hospital for having the first baby of the new year. Grandparents are Vern and Carla Bachtel and Joe and Carolyn Gavit of Streetsboro; and Dave and Wendy Broman of Stow. Great-grandparents include Carl Wolford of Kent and Leta Hartman of Streetsboro. The couple was hoping to be discharged this afternoon, noting that this is the first time they’ve been away from their older son. Broman noted that his son was already becoming a child who liked to be held all the time. He joked that the child is a “mama’s boy.” Bachtel, meanwhile, said Kolton seems to be as good-natured as her older son. “He’s a good baby,” she said. “He’s very content and quiet.”
