The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Planning Committee presented Gospel Night recently at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Ravenna. Christi Brown of Children Always Resisting Enemies (C.A.R.E.) served as mistress of ceremonies. The Rev. Steve Dokes of the United Church of Jesus Christ gave the invocation. Deseree Perry, Skeels Youth coordinator, welcomed the 75 people in attendance. The theme for the evening was from Psalms: "Oh sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvelous things." Several church choirs sang two songs each. They included the Winfield Church of God, whose pastor is the Rev. W.J. Evans, and Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, whose pastor is the Rev. Andrew Wright. Ralston Purkiss and Company played instrumental music. The Apostolic Choir and the Brotherhood, both of the United Church of Jesus Christ, performed. Their pastor, Elder James Sanders, also gave remarks. Winners of the Art and Essay Contest, sponsored by Family & Community Services, Inc., were presented. Danielle Norquest of Southeast Intermediate School won the Art Contest. Payton Pooler of Willyard Elementary School in Ravenna won the Essay Contest but was not present, so Johneva Jenkins read the winning essay aloud. A freewill offering was taken, the proceeds from which will benefit the Skeels-Mathews and King-Kennedy community centers in Ravenna. The Rev. Andrew Wright of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church gave the benediction. The planning committee is made up of Family & Community Services, Inc., POWERcorps, Senior Corps, AmeriCorps VISTA, Skeels-Mathews Community Center and Portage Learning Centers. Comments
