Jack L. Smith "Happy Jack" 81 of Ravenna passed away Thursday February 4

passed away Thursday February 4, 2010 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after several months of failing health. He was born September 13, 1928 in Elyria, Ohio to the late Leroy and Margaret (Simonds) Smith. Mr. Smith has lived in Ravenna since 1970 and was formerly of Elyria. He retired in 1991 from the Harshaw Chemical Company in Solon where he worked in Shipping and Receiving. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Ravenna and was a professional clown hence the name Happy Jack, but that also describes his love of life. He played the bass fiddle with his mother in bands in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's, he loved to volunteer to help with the highlight of his life working on a building project in Lima Peru. Survivors include his 1st cousins Myrtle Ross of Stow, Carol Brenneman of Medina, 2nd and 3rd cousins Elaine Lewis, Pat (Mike) Bilderback, Sheri (Arnold) Ingraham, John Brenneman, Rob (Allison) Lewis, Carrie (Troy) Spangler and Kevin (Molly) Bilderback, friends Doug & Donna Peters, Richard & Marian Morris and his happy cat Stripe. Calling hours will be 2-4 Sunday February 7, 2010 at the Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Homes Ravenna Chapel where funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday February 8, 2010 with Rev. Gary Beck and Pastor Richard Skiver Officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery Ravenna, Ohio. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Ravenna Assembly of God Church, Bethel Baptists Sr. Group or the Portage County APL.
