A little bit of Las Vegas comes to Rootstown when the Rootstown Athletic Department joins the Sports Boosters to host the annual reverse raffle at Independence Hall on S.R. 44 in Rootstown. This year's event is set for March 13 from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. and remains the same admission price, $45 per person. Each ticket includes one person's dinner and drinks for the evening plus a chance at the $1,500 grand prize. Everyone has a great time during the evening that includes a silent auction and a variety of games. For more information or to purchase tickets, call Keith Waesch, athletic director, at 330-325-2006. ------ Student musicians and choir members are very busy as the new year begins. Angela Christensen was selected and participated in the Bowling Green State University Sight Reading Clinic and Festival in January. While Angela was traveling to Bowling Green, Jacob Riley, Ben Postlethwait and Kristin Vermilya participated in the Kent State All Star Band that performed at KSU at the end of January. ------ With those recognitions completed, members of both the high school band and the choir are preparing to compete in the Ohio Music Education Association District VI High School Solo and Ensemble Contest this Saturday as well as the large group contest that will take place on March 27. Students prepare their selections and are judged on their performance by a panel of judges. Watch for more information on the success of these students as they compete in the OMEA sponsored contests. ------ The First Congregational Church of Rootstown, United Church of Christ welcomes guests to a buffet cabbage roll dinner on Feb. 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. The menu includes cabbage rolls, salads, vegetables, rolls, delicious homemade desserts and beverages. Adults may eat for $9 with children admitted for $4. Carry-outs are always available. The church is located at the intersection of Tallmadge Road and S.R. 44. Watch for future buffets and dinners that are planned on selected third Saturdays of the month. ------ Another option for dinner is available by purchasing a Sorboro Pizza Card for $10 from the Rootstown Middle School Parents, Teachers and Students organization. Cards are good for 20 uses and may be redeemed at Sorboro's for either a buy one stromboli, get one free or buy one large pizza and get one small, one-topping free. Interested pizza-lovers may purchase a card in the Rootstown Middle School office or may call RMS at 330-325-9956, Laura Marva at 330-325-7449 or Janeen Skipper at 330-697-1005. ------ Many students at Rootstown High School are active as representatives of their school. This year, the Brain Game Team includes members David Andexler, Anthony Christensen, Charles Doolittle, Emily Morgan and Kristen Vermilya. The successful Quiz Bowl Team members enjoying success in competitions against other schools includes Andexler, Anthony Christensen, Angie Christensen, Charles Doolittle, Jordan Michael, Morgan, Hannah Morgan, Nikos Onapolis, Ben Postlethwait, Collin Marshall, Jacob Riley, Vermilya and Jordan Wilson.
