The commitment by Portage County Engineer Michael Marozzi to improve the intersections of South Prospect Street and Summit Road in Ravenna Township is welcome news. Marozzi has received $700,000 in federal safety funds to install traffic signals at the intersection along with left-turn lanes. The site of 25 collisions from 2006 to 2008, the intersection, particularly busy during rush hour, is hazardous. A good bit of the problem involves the underpass that proceeds under the Norfolk Southern Railroad bridge, where South Prospect traffic must take two turns. The county engineer is hopeful that installing traffic signals at the Hayes Road juncture and the Summit Road juncture will improve safety by better regulating the flow of traffic. This is because the visibility at the nearby underpass is virtually zero after a few yards and those on Hayes wanting to turn on to South Prospect cannot see oncoming traffic. Decades ago, Marozzi's predecessor, LeRoy Satrom, proposed rebuilding the entire intersection with help from the railroad so vehicular traffic would flow more easily with improved visibility. The proposal was never funded. Although Marozzi's solution is not as elaborate, it will make this tricky intersection with its blind spots much safer, fulfilling the purpose of the federal safety fund grant he has obtained.
