By Mike Sever Record-Courier staff writer Slumped revenue for recyclable materials has resulted in two layoffs at the Portage County Solid Waste Management District. District commissioners recently approved the job cuts. Two workers on the recycling line at the Brimfield recycling center will be affected. Commissioner Chris Smeiles said workers represented by the Teamsters had turned down a request for financial concessions earlier this year. William Steiner, director of the recycling district, said revenue from the sale of recyclables continues to be low. Steiner also got approval to temporarily shut down the district's hazardous home chemicals collection program for this year, due to the budget crunch. "I don't think our budget is going to be able to address" the program this year, he said. Steiner said the program, which allows residents to turn in leftover containers of hazardous household chemicals and pesticides, "is a very valuable service for residents." Without it, there is concern that chemicals could end up being dumped down the sewer, he said. The center on Mogadore Road in Brimfield will continue to take compact fluorescent lights and waste oil, Steiner said. Comments
