Liquor sales up in Ohio... again For second year in a row, states sets a new record for alcohol salesFebruary 9, 2010
Spirituous liquor sales in Ohio rose in 2009 for the second year in a row and once again set a new record for total dollar sales and gallons sold. The Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control reported Monday sales of intoxicating liquor containing more than 21 percent alcohol by volume reached $734.8 million in the 2009 calendar year. Those sales figures beat 2008 by $15.7 million, or 2.17 percent. "Dollar sales have been increasing for several years, mostly due to increases in product prices, consumers buying premium-priced products, and a rise in the level of consumption," Ohio Commerce Director Kimberly Zurz said in a release. "Other factors ... include better inventory management and product selection, and better management of contract liquor agency locations." The sales and improved efficiency by the division of liquor control led to a net profit of $224.2 million and a total contribution of $299 million to the state's treasury. More than 10 million gallons of spirituous liquor were sold in Ohio during the 2009 calendar year. The top-selling brand was Kamchatka Vodka, which sold 400,787 gallons, according to the state division of commerce. Comments
