Encouraging Census participation Kent State students part of a national outreach campaignFebruary 24, 2010
By Matt Fredmonsky Record-Courier staff writer A group of Kent State University marketing students is trying to encourage fellow students, and community members, to be sure and fill out the 2010 U.S. Census questionnaire when it arrives at households this year. The efforts are part of a campaign by the KSU chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, which is competing in a national student marketing contest with the U.S. Census Bureau as its real-world client. The student campaign started Feb. 1 and will end Feb. 28. Katie Young, one of the KSU students engineering the local campaign, said so far they've conducted spot interviews to try and determine how much -- or how little -- information residents and students have about the Census. She spoke to Kent City Council this month and stressed the importance of residents and students filling out the Census, as each year the federal government allocates more than $300 billion to states and communities based in part on census data. Young said this week the city and university are recognizing the campaign by hosting numerous events as part of "Count Kent in a Flash; 2010 U.S. Census awareness week." Comments
