Could you get by without Saturday mail delivery? How would you feel about paying 50 cents, or more, to mail a Christmas card? There's a good chance we may have to get used to both. A five-day delivery schedule and higher postal rates are among the changes being considered by the U.S. Postal Service as it addresses a projected $238 billion budget shortfall by 2020. The Postal Service, which is looking at a $7 billion loss this year alone, is undoubtedly in a tough spot. The number of items it handled fell from 213 billion in 2006 to 177 billion in 2009. That number is expected to fall to 150 billion by 2020. The Postal Service needs to balance its budget. Let's just hope the agency is recognizable after all the changes are made and that we can still afford to send a letter or card.
