STREETSBORO — For the second time this month, a young student encountered a person in a suspicious vehicle.
On Wednesday at 8:30 p.m., an 11-year-old boy walking home from a friend’s house on St. Charles Drive reported to his parents that a van stopped several feet away from him, and the driver reportedly opened the door and yelled out “Hey kid, come here,” according to the Streetsboro Police Department.
The boy did not respond and ran to his residence at that time, and the family contacted police. The vehicle left the area, according to police.
The red van was described as a “newer” van with curved features (not boxlike, or square). The van also had a loud engine or muffler, said police.
Little descriptive information is available regarding the driver of the van.  The juvenile described the subject as a male with a low, “gruffly” voice, said police.
This is the second recent incident this month of a suspicious van approaching a juvenile. On March 3, a van approached a 10-year-old boy in the early morning hours on Delores Drive as he waited for the school bus.
Streetsboro police ask any resident who sees a suspicious vehicle in their neighborhood to contact the police department. Police also ask parents and guardians to encourage children to be aware of their surroundings, and to report anything unusual immediately.

Of the parent of the 11 year old boy, my son is watched every minute of the day and was told to call home prior to leaving. I missed his first call and since he was only 6 houses down the road, he started walking as I was calling him back. By the time he answered his phone on the first ring, we were at the bottom of our drive and he was within 5 feet of us, the van was gone and all that matters is that he is safe now. This all happened within 2 minutes. All I can say is thank god that we had prepared our son for things like this and he did exactly what he should have done. Run, scream, don't talk to strangers and call someone.

I also would encourage parents to not let the children walk home alone in the evening, it is dark at 830 pm. It does take a village and we all need to be aware of our surrondings

That would be a good idea Blue Harvest Records but I would up the radius to 50 miles, at least. It would work as long as the predator has been caught before.

Here is an idea...cross reference every sexual predator within a 20 mile radius (including Summit and Cuyahoga counties) with the vehicle description and begin investigating before something terrible happens.

It is ashame that our children can't even walk home from a friends house anymore. What happened to the days of watching out for each others children - neighbors were just an extended family. Now we have to be cautious of our neighbors. Whether the kid was walking home from a few houses down from his or from around the corner - it is just a terrible shame.
As far as the person trying to pick up these boys; this should be a high warning for everyone to start caring about yours and others and watch for everything. People need to stop turning a blind eye and be aware of everything that goes on around them.
I pray that this person is caught quickly.

Not trying to condone the actions of someone trying to get children to come into their van but why was an 11 year old walking home from a friends house at 8:30 at night?
