There's green everywhere: St. Patrick's Day festive but calm in Kent

Green people, green hair, green shirts and green beer were all part of Wednesday’s celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in downtown Kent.

The mood was festive but calm, with few apparent problems in the early afternoon. The bars and patios on Franklin Avenue were crammed with people in green apparel.

Kent State University students partied the day away on the front lawns of fraternity houses on East Main and South Lincoln streets, staying off the sidewalks with their drinks. They played drinking games and cornhole and threw lacrosse balls and frisbees around as other revelers in green walked the streets talking about heading to the next bar.

A group of partiers in front of the Delta Upsilon fraternity house on South Lincoln Street waved a reporter over and took a break from their cornhole game to pose for photos. They were among at least three-dozen people on the fraternity’s front lawn enjoying sunny skies and a high temperature near 60 degrees.

“It’s just a great time,” said KSU sophomore accounting/finance major Antonino Bucca, standing in front of the Delta Upsilon fraternity house on South Lincoln Street.

As of 8:45 p.m., Kent police said there were no major incidents to report.

While I respect your opinion AndrewP. I simply do not agree with it being a FACT the Kent PD had nothing to do with provoking the kids into the last riot. We have way too many younger and/or ROBOCOPS with badges that have lost their sight on what they were hired to do. Protect and Serve, not to taunt and create revenue. I personally have seen how they behave and I can assure you there is more to it than you would like to believe. I'm one to sit back and watch and listen.

On another note, I do agree, that I am happy to see the even without incident.

Police and SWAT were around and made themselves known at Halloween, yet there were no riots. I stand by the FACT that it was the partyers that started the College Street riot, not the cops.

That being said, It was nice to see that there were no major incidents, and those hosting May Day parties this year should definitely take notes on this day and ensure that there are no major incidents again this year.

Man...why all the negativity. It was a good time. No minorities coming in and beating or murdering innocent whites. However lots of green vomit.
It was a great day!

It is still too cold for Kent cops to be out in full effect. Give it about 6 weeks...

What? They didn't call in the National Guard or gear up and call in swatt? Kent PD didn't provoke the students into a "riot" and make national headlines? They are slipping.
