By Dave O'Brien Record-Courier staff writer A Garrettsville woman, in court Monday for a status hearing on a 2008 drug possession arrest, was sent to jail for 30 days after probation officers told a judge she had screened positive for morphine use prior to her court appearance. Laura M. Schmucker, of 8102 Southwood Drive, Apt. 20, tested negative for drug use as recently as Friday, according to the Portage County Adult Probation Department. Defense attorney Karl Rissland told Portage County Common Pleas Judge Laurie Pittman he knew nothing about the positive test until the hearing, and would let his client explain why she tested positive. Schmucker blamed the failed test on prescription Vicodin painkillers, she said were prescribed to her. Pittman found Schmucker violated the terms of probation, ordered it extended and ordered Schmucker to attend two 12-step meetings per week for one year to help her kick her drug habit. Schmucker, who had been accepted into the NorthEast Ohio Community Alternative Program for felony drug offenders in Warren, was handcuffed on the spot by Portage County sheriff's deputies. Pittman said she can still attend the NEOCAP when the next available bed opens up. Comments
