The Kent Board of Education has voted to change the minimum age requirement to enter kindergarten in the Kent City School District. Children now must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1. Previously, the age requirement was Sept. 30. Ohio law allows districts to choose one of the two dates. Surrounding districts, including Field, Ravenna and Streetsboro, already operate under the Aug. 1 deadline. "A new Ohio law requires that we offer all-day kindergarten for all students. This is anticipated to start in the fall of 2011, so we are making an age change to ensure that every kindergartner is prepared for an all-day learning experience," said Lori Slattery, director of instructional programs for Kent schools. Kindergarten registration will be held at all Kent elementary schools at 7 p.m. April 7. Kent will continue to offer its tuition-based kindergarten option for the 2010-11 school year.
