Twice a year, parent mentors Sandy Craft of Southeast Local Schools and Robin Howard of Field Local Schools host an "Unskating Party" for children with disabilities. This event allows children of all abilities to get out onto a roller skating rink, something they may otherwise never be able to do. Springfield Lake Roller Rink donates the use of the rink and staff. The event is sponsored by the Field/Southeast Parent Mentor Program. Pizza and pop donations are received from local businesses such as Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Gionino's, East of Chicago, Giant Eagle and Walmart. The most recent "Unskating Party" featured the Northeast Ohio Roller Derby Team for the first time. The girls helped the children in the rink, giving parents a break. They donated a basket full of goodies that was raffled off and all proceeds went to benefit future events. They also gave the kids and families a demonstration of what it's like in the real Roller Derby rink. The next party will be held in the fall. The Roller Derby Girls have asked to come back and be a supporter of all future "Unskating Parties." (photos) Matt Craft of Southeast Schools with Derby Girl SinMon-Sugah. Comments
