Last week, 34 boys, from second to seventh grade, attended the 2010 Streetsboro Youth Basketball Camp. Streetsboro High School boys' basketball coach Todd Muckelroy ran the camp, with help from current high school basketball players Leon Hedgepeth, Edward Julian and Niko Withers, as well as alum Robert Wilson, who currently plays basketball at Urbana University. Each day, there was a theme; Monday was about fundamentals, Tuesday was defense, Wednesday was shooting and Thursday brought all the skills together through various drills. Tuesday also featured guest speaker Steve Fleming, head boys' basketball coach at Hiram College. While learning various skills all week, the boys also got to play games and compete in different contests. Coach Muckelroy said he was pleased with how camp went this year. "It is a fun event and I look forward to doing it every summer," he said. "In fact, I'm planning to make it bigger and better in 2011." So mark your calendars, June 13 to 16, 2011, is the next Streetsboro Youth Basketball Camp. Streetsboro United Soccer Club, formed just under a year ago, is open to boys and girls ages 7 to 14. The club currently has five teams. Coaches Scott Deevers and Jason Miller coach one of those teams -- the girls' U10 team, which finished second place in their division in their first season. The girls also recently took second in the Medina Invitational Soccer Tournament. Coach Deevers said the club overall has grown in size from 22 when they started last fall to more than 50 currently. "They're just a great group of kids and a great group of parents," said Deevers. "With the Streetsboro United Club, we want to build another outlet for the kids in Streetsboro, to help elevate their game. We want people to know there is soccer in Streetsboro." Streetsboro United Soccer Club competes within the Greater Akron Amateur Soccer Association (GAASA). If you're interested in more information about the club, you can call Deevers at 330-310-9572. The group participated in the annual Catholic Heart Work Camp, which is held in various cities throughout the U.S. The program was developed by a husband and wife team in Orlando, FLA., in 1993, who wanted to get young people involved with meaningful service work while at the same time helping the teens grow spiritually. The kids from St. Joan traveled to Toledo for the program this year. Camp ran Monday through Friday, with campers working Monday through Thursday. They had Friday as a free day. Chaperone Rick Squier, whose daughter, Rachel, worked the camp this year, was very impressed with the whole program. "Catholic Heart Work Camp gets these kids out in the community, bonding with each other and serving the needs of the less fortunate. Our kids really wanted to leave Toledo a better place than when we first arrived." The teens did a variety of manual labor, including work with the "Toledo Grows" project, a community gardening outreach program of the Toledo Botanical Garden. Kudos to the teens and adults who were involved in such a worthy undertaking.
