The Ravenna Board of Education has selected the school district’s next superintendent.

Dennis Honkala, superintendent at Buckeye Local Schools near Medina, has been tapped as the replacement to Superintendent Dr. Tim Calfee, who is stepping down when the school year ends this summer. Honkala is expected to be officially hired when the board meets on Monday at Ravenna High School, 6589 N. Chestnut St.

Other finalists for the position included Mark Robinson, superintendent at Ashland City Schools; and Philip Wagner, assistant superintendent at Beachwood City Schools.

The board also initially interviewed Lorie Coll Marozzi, principal of Ravenna High School; Deborah A. Grant, principal of West Main Elementary School; Thomas D. Gay, president and CEO of The Quality Schools Group near Detroit, Mich.; James P. Kalis, superintendent, Riverside Local Schools in Painsville; and Christine A. Standring, director of curriculum, Huron City Schools. Robert W. Hunt, assistant superintendent of the Chagrin Falls School District, also was a candidate but withdrew after accepting the superintendent’s position in Streetsboro.

“He interviewed very well,” said Roger Boltz, president of the board of education. “Everyone liked him. We had three very good candidates and I know we made the right choice.”

Honkala will be paid $115,000 per year, slightly less than Calfee’s salary of $117,825.

Honkala has been superintendent at Buckeye since 2007, and before that was the district’s high school principal.

The board also will meet in executive session Monday to review candidates for the treasurer’s position.

Jerry Meyer, the district’s treasurer, also is retiring when the school year ends. Honkala will be invited to be part of that process, board members have said.

The Ohio School Boards Association conducted both searches.
