Howard Elton Hartman

Howard Elton Hartman of Kent passed away August 17, 2008 at Akron City Hospital with his family by his side. He was born July 5, 1922 in Nelsonville, Ohio to the late John and Florence Hartman. He has lived in Kent the past 68 years and was a retired machinist of 43 years from Gougler Machine/ Kent Air Tool in Kent, Ohio where he was fondly known as Junior. He was a proud veteran of the US Army having served with the 945th Field Artillery Battalion during World War II receiving many honors. He also was a member of Masonic Temple in Ravenna and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Kent. He was a loving family man who loved gardening, bowling and fishing, but most enjoyed spending time with his family and laughing. He was an avid bowler who will be missed by his Tuesday morning teammates and friends at Kent Lanes. One of his most enjoyable past times was telling stories to his family and friends of his many challenges and experiences he experienced throughout his lifetime. He loved sharing his many talents and vegetable gardening with his many friends and family. Howard was an individual who spread his love for life to all of those who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Leta (Hampton); daughter, Carolyn (Joe) Hartman of Streetsboro; grandchildren, Gregory (Toshia) Broman of Streetsboro, Nacole Gavit of Charlotte, North Carolina, Michael Broman of Ravenna and Danielle Broman of Streetsboro; sister, Rita (Charles) McKnight of Lancaster; nephews, Gary (Sharon) Wachenschwanz of Circleville and Evan Simons of Lancaster; nieces, Shari (Ed) Simons of Lancaster, Diane McKnight of Lancaster, and Christy Wachen- schwanz of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Violet and Paul Wachen- schwanz. Friends will be received on Thursday, August 21 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, 628 West Main Street in Kent. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, August 22nd at 11 am followed by burial at Standing Rock Cemetery. (RC 08-19-08))
