I am the mother of Nelly Warren, who was involved in a tragic accident in February 2008. I am certain that these past months have been nearly unbearable for the family of Ada Van Horn and my entire family's hearts go out to them.
I would like others to know that Nelly and her friends and family also are suffering tremendously. My daughter is a loving, compassionate person. Throughout the years, she has shown those around her respect and love and, yes, remorse for mistakes she has made.
I only wish other people know her like I do, and like her friends and family do. Nelly would never intentionally hurt anyone. She's always been there for those who need her.
We are only human. People make mistakes. But it's how we react to those mistakes, and changes we make in our lives as a result, that matter.
Taking my daughter away is not the answer to this tragedy. She has paid dearly, from the day of the accident. It has consumed her, and I know she will continue to live with this for the rest of her life. She has been forever changed. That is the type of person Nelly is. But we can't force people to listen to us. We just have to hope there are people who have feelings and compassion for other human beings, and realize that others are suffering as well.
My heart aches for Ada Van Horn and her family, and it breaks for my daughter and those who love her. This is a tragedy that has affected two families. Two families are suffering unspeakable pain.
Please remember that there is a loving, caring and devastated young woman involved her. And, despite the hate-filled opinions of some, Nelly's life is meaningful; she is not a throwaway.
She is my daughter and I love her with all my heart.
