OTHER VOICES: Schwartz's legacy at CSU

Share_print Print Story    |    Comments    |

Michael Schwartz, who retired Tuesday as president of Cleveland State University, likes to joke that people will remember him as the person who put the ivy-green CSU letters on the Rhodes Tower.

He is far too modest.

When Schwartz's eight-year presidency concludes on June 30, he will have transformed CSU's concrete bunker-style architecture into a more welcoming school with a sense of place and a sense of pride.

His tenure should be much appreciated by anyone eager to see CSU play a greater role in raising the educational level of Greater Cleveland's work force.

Schwartz, 71, has hewed to a master plan that flooded the school's fortress exterior with light and openness.

He leaves CSU's academic program stronger than he found it.

Schwartz was no rookie when he arrived at CSU. He had honed his leadership skills at Kent State University, where he served as president for nine years. But it's fair to say that his heart belonged to CSU, where he plans to teach after a one-year sabbatical. (Reprinted from the Cleveland Plain Dealer)
