Mary Aileen (Red) (Nana) Schettler, 99, of Stow, Ohio (Mary Sunshine) passed away peacefully into the loving arms of her savior Jesus Christ, our Lord, on the evening of Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at her home in Stow, in the presence of her son & caregiver, Phillip R Schettler. Mary was born in South Dumphries, Ontario, Canada, in 1909 to George Edward & Mary Catherine (Johnson) Curley, according to family records. Mary was Native American / Irish. Marys Great Grandfather, George Johnson was full Mohawk chief of the Six Nations of the Iroquois confederation that settled near Brantford, Ontario. Mary & her husband of 54 years, Richard P. Schettler lived in Ravenna, Ohio from 1958 to 1998 where Richard ran the insurance brokerage business, Schettler Insurance. Richard preceded Mary to heavens gate in August of 2000. Mary was a veteran of World War II and served with the Canadian Womens Army Corps as a Corporal in London, England during the Blitz of 1940. As a stenographer and switchboard operator, Mary witnessed many horrors as well as much gallantry as she along with the Commonwealth fought the enemy back during the Battle of Britain for befalling the people of Europe with the horrific sins of Nazism during those dark times. May National Socialism never return to any world. Suffering a war service disability she returned to Canada in 1942, was medaled and released honorably from the Canadian Armed Forces into civilian life. Mary settled in Galt (now Cambridge), Ontario near the Grand River, where she worked as a secretary / stenographer for a deaf architect in Hamilton, Ontario and entertained in regional cabarets as a singer/ dancer as well as an actress in little theatres in Southern Ontario. She loved and rode Harley and Indian motorcycles all across Canada and the States. She then, at the behest of her sister, Jessie, studied cosmetology in Cleveland, Ohio and worked briefly in her sister, Jessies, Cleveland beauty shop, then subsequently returned to Galt to open her own beauty salon, The Beauty Center. First on Water Street, then later on Grand Ave. South in Galt. Mary met her husband to be, Richard, a Canadian World War II Army veteran, through Richards sister, Carol Kilpatrick in Galt in 1945 while he was on leave, and they were married a year later on June 29th, 1946 in Christs Church Cathedral, Hamilton, Ontario. Mary & Richard ran The Beauty Center, together on Grand Ave. South from 1946 through 1956, when Richard went into the insurance business with Mutual of Omaha as an underwriter. During those years, son, Phillip Richard was born in 1950, with daughter, Janice Mary soon to follow in 1951. Mary & Richard were loving devoted parents. In 1958, Mary closed the beauty business and together with the family moved to Ravenna, Ohio where Richard became the regional manager for Mutual of Omaha in N.E. Ohio until 1963 when he opened his own insurance brokerage, Schettler Insurance in the Loomis Building in downtown Ravenna. Mary was desirous to be a stay-at-home Mom, raise the kids and tend to the home. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, with the kids in high school & college, Mary decided to return to work as a secretary in the Portage County Auditors office. Mary could also be found at all of the elections in Portage County as an election poll worker where she donated many hours to insure that the vote was taken correctly. Mary retired in 1971, to devote her time to her grandchildren, her piano, sewing, crafts and artwork and to continue her charity work in and around Portage County. Mary and Richard enjoyed their retirement together while living on West Riddle Ave. in Ravenna where they enjoyed many evenings playing cards with old friends, tending to the flowers and garden, listening to the Tribe, and babysitting their grandchildren. Mary lost her husband, Richard, in August of 2000, while in the care of her daughter and son-in-law, Janice & Greg Buso, at their farm, North of Ravenna, where Mary loved to go for walks to pick wild berries. In, 2001 Mary came to live with her son, Phillip at his home in Franklin Twp., and then relocated with him in 2004 to his current home in Stow, Ohio, where she remained until passing, recently. During these times Mary expressly enjoyed her daycares at Portage Area Senior Services (now Coleman Senior Services) in Kent & Ravenna, then at Summa Senior Center in Cuyahoga Falls, where her life long love of the arts flourished for the benefit of all the grand old folks there, entertaining them with her songs and her artwork. She was much loved for her grace and her wit. Her venerated response to a strangers question of How are you doing, Mary with - Im doing everybody I can! always brought a good laugh and sweet air. Her grace and wit will be missed. Mary was preceded in death by her eternally loved parents, George Edward & Mary Catherine (Johnson) Curley of Oshweken, Ontario; brother, Lloyd Curley of Oshweken, Ontario, whom died in Flanders in World War I while serving in the Canadian Armed Forces as a motorcycle courier; brother Ollie Curley of Oshweken, Ontario; sister, Violet (Vi) Liberty of Hamilton, Ontario; sister, Ada (Maimee) Martin of Oshweken, Ontario; sister, Etta (Dolly) Atfield of Brantford, Ontario; sister, Jesse (Me-me) Bickle of Chardon, Ohio; sister, Mina Hill of Oshweken, Ontario, and her lifelong devoted husband, Richard Vernon Phillip Schettler of Ravenna, Ohio, formerly of Galt (Cambridge) Ontario and Broadview, Saskatchewan CANADA.
