The recent zoning election in Deerfield Township was initiated for various reasons, but the most serious of these is the lack of adoption of a state or national zoning code that has been voted on and tested by code-making panels. These national zoning codes are submitted by concerned citizens across the country and usually take three years of hearings before they either fail or gain approval to become code. Ohio Revised Code Section 519 confers zoning code adoption and procedures to township trustees. While most trustees who run for office do feel they can seriously make a difference for the betterment of the township, most however have no previous experience in zoning codes or the adoption and enforcement of such codes and they rely heavily on the advice of the representative legal adviser. Zoning is a necessary tool for all townships and, when properly adopted, applied and enforced, can and would be the greatest property value protector for all residents in the township. It is a shame that Deerfield zoning was defeated, as some zoning is always better than none at all. I would strongly recommend that the township trustees form a new zoning commission made up per the Ohio Revised Code and either call for a special election or place on the next general election ballot a zoning code that is made up of approved Ohio and national zoning code language that will advance the property values of the township for the good of all.
