Wrong move on Falcon Academy

This is a very dark day for Field Schools! When the majority of the school board members voted to turn down a half-million dollar grant to begin the Falcon Academy for the Arts, they delivered a huge blow to the district.

After many months of research and writing grants, the superintendent, assistant superintendent and treasurer of our district were united in wholeheartedly recommending the formation of this academy as a way to increase the educational options available to children and to bring in additional funding to our schools. A community-driven business council also carefully studied the financial impact and determined it to be a fiscally responsible move. In addition, the state had confidence that this venture would be successful or they would have never awarded the grant in the first place.

Having served on the Field Board of Education for eight years, I am flabbergasted that the board does not see the ramifications that its decision will have on our district. An amended financial recovery plan will have to be made, which will necessitate the loss of jobs for a number of our teachers.

The majority of the current board seems bent on driving out the superintendent and micromanaging the district. If the community allows this to happen, I believe that Field Schools will join Springfield Schools in being under state control within the near future.

I would ask the board to reconsider this matter before the March 15 deadline.
