Days before taking office as Ohio’s Depression era governor, Martin L. Davey was all smiles for the Kent Courier-Tribune before making a luncheon appearance at First Congregational Church of Kent, where more than 200 well-wishers were on hand to greet him in January 1935. The governor-elect received a hometown hero’s welcome at the event, which was organized by the Kent Chamber of Commerce, Kent Rotary and Kent Kiwanis. Davey’s appearance was one of several he made in Kent and Ravenna prior to becoming the state’s 53rd chief executive on Jan. 14, 1935. The Kent tree care company executive was a two-term governor, serving from 1935 through 1938. He died in 1946. This photo was among a recently discovered archive of 75-year-old images of the Kent and Ravenna predecessor publications of the Record-Courier.
