Celtic Beltane Festival

April 22, 2007

A SCOTTISH CELEBRATION OF SPRING

The 3rd Annual Celtic Beltane Festival

The Scottish American Society is sponsoring its third annual Celtic Beltane Festival on Saturday the 19th of May 2007. Opening ceremony is at noon, closing ceremony at 6:00 in the evening. The Maccallum Highlanders Pipes and Drums will perform at the opening and throughout the day. The event will take place at Maize Valley Farms, 6193 Edison Street NE (State Route 619) just east of Hartville, Ohio. Admission cost is $8 adult, $6 seniors, $5 under 12, under 5 free, with a family rate of $20.

This is the third year for the festival and it is bigger and better than ever. There are highland athletic events (including caber tossing - the caber being a close relative to our telephone pole) and a strong man competition. Traditional music from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales will be featured via bands and through

J & C Entertainment. Many vendors will be selling goods of all kinds - from carved Welsh love spoons, to traditional costumes, to Celtic jewelry and gift items, and even one who sells armory and accoutrements.

The Canadian Women’s Auxiliary Drill Team will perform, as will the Welsh Country Dancers from Columbus. The award winning Tigh Na Creige Highland Dance Group will present traditional highland dance, and the Heather Belles will perform more contemporary highland dance routines. Scottish Country Dancers from Kent, Ohio will demonstrate dances anyone can easily learn. There will also be story tellers, Celtic harpers, a demonstration of "waulking" the wool, sheep shearing, traditional food and beverages at reasonable cost, wine tasting for the adults, a "make & take" area for the kiddies and free samples of Walker’s shortbread to eat or take home.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Pegasus, an association dedicated to horseback riding therapy for those who are disabled or handicapped. For more information on Pegasus, see their web site at: www.pegasusfarm.org
