NELSON -- Bids for this year's road improvement project were opened Wednesday and township trustees accepted a bid from Hughes Construction Inc.

The paving project will cover a total of more than 79,000 square yards and will include the township-owned roadways of Bancroft, Fenstermaker, Nicholson, Paul Sophia, Pritchard, Norton and the eastern end of Knowlton Road.

The accepted bid of $85,425 was the lowest among the four submitted.

Prior to the bid opening, the Portage County Engineer's Office gave a preliminary estimated cost of the project of $100,400.

Other bidders considered included H. Luli Construction Co., Frank Martuccio Asphalt & Paving, and Roanyak Paving Inc.

Next, trustees will confirm the required bid bonds are in place before any work takes place.

In other township news, the Nelson Community House has two new caretakers to over see the day-to-day operations. Residents Jim and Michelle Cmunt now handle the upkeep and scheduling duties.

Also, the Pixley Park Development Committee is gearing up for a community garage sale, on May 24, 25 and 26. All proceeds will go toward the development of Pixley Park.
