Falcons keep playoff hopes alive

COVENTRY TWP. - The visiting Falcons kept their state playoff hopes alive with a 45-7 victory on Friday, as Jay Lugo ran for three touchdowns in routing the Comets in a Portage Trail Conference Metro Division contest.
Field (8-2, 6-1), which finished alone in second place in the Metro Division, entered Friday in 10th place in Division III, Region 9, but will need help in order to make the playoffs for the second year in a row.
The Falcons jumped out to a 38-0 lead after three quarters.
Lugo scored on a 4-yard run to give field a 6-0 lead after one quarter.
Carlton Gray raced in from 21 yards, Mike Ries recovered a fumble in the end zone and recorded a safety by tackling a Comet ball carrier in the end zone as the Falcons pushed the score to 24-0 at halftime.
Lugo opened the second half with a 2-yard TD run, Field added another safety and Lugo capped a drive with a 3-yard dash in the third quarter.
Coventry (3-7, 3-4) finally got on the scoreboard with a touchdown in the third quarter, but Field rounded out the scoring in the final quarter on a 95-yard TD run by Patrick Boggs.
Boggs was the leading ball carrier for the Falcons, gaining 98 yards in just two carries.
Quarterback Matt Eldreth added 94 yards in 16 tries, while Lugo had 56 yards in 17 carries.
