Late score lifts Newton Falls past Windham

NEWTON FALLS " Kyle Clonch scored on a 1-yard run with one second left in the game to lift Newton Falls to a 26-20 non-league win over Windham on Friday in a regular-season contest that was postponed earlier in the season.
Windham (1-9) had a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter, but Newton Falls (4-6) tied the score at 14-14 at the half.
The Tigers took a 7-0 lead with 4:12 left in the opening quarter on a 3-yard TD run by John Davis.
With 1:07 left in the first quarter Alan Blake, who led all rushers with 142 yards in 22 carries, cut the Newton Falls lead to 7-6 on a 7-yard touchdown run. The potential tying conversion kick, however, failed.
With 5:18 left in the first half, Dave VanSteenberg ran 4 yards for a TD, and a Matt Whan run for the 2-point conversion gave Windham a 14-7 lead.
But 2:30 before halftime, Anthony Kline of Newton Falls raced 6 yards into the end zone to even the score at intermission.
The Tigers took a 20-14 lead with 8:22 left in the third quarter on a 7-yard touchdown by Davis, but the PAT failed.
Windham had a chance to take the lead with 1:04 left in the third quarter as Blake scored on a 2-yard run, but the run for the 2-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 20-20 and setting up Newton Falls' final scoring drive.
Davis led the Tigers on the ground with 60 yards in 16 carries. Newton Falls quarterback Matt Blazen was 8-of-13 for 101 yards, while Matt Novotny had six catches for 68 yards for the Tigers.
