The cookie baking soon will begin again at the Portage County Senior Center in Ravenna.
The second phase of construction for the center, which includes a kitchen, was approved recently by the Portage County Board of Commissioners.
Sally Kelly, center administrator, said the second phase will add a large kitchen to serve the needs of seniors who create items for their bake sales.
“It’s something they’ve missed doing,” Kelly said.
It also will allow seniors to do periodic breakfasts and lunches, and the senior nutrition program will use the kitchen to warm up food for lunches at the center.
Other parts of phase two will be to add offices, possibly including a mini-craft shop.
The board accepted a low bid of $56,282 and an alternate of $3,700 from Stittle Construction Corp. of Salem, Ohio. Stittle was the lowest of nine bidders on the work. The $3,700 is to add a chair lift to a stairway so seniors can more easily access the senior center.
The center is located on the bottom floor of the Resources on Oakwood Campus building owned by Family & Community Services Inc. on Oakwood Street.
Commissioners also are discussing how to add parking for the center. That could include acquiring adjacent property from the former White Rubber plant if brownfield clean-up funds are available from the state.
Kelly said the number of seniors attending programs exceeds the available parking.
