July 4, 2009

Record-Courier staff report

A 36-year-old Ravenna Township man was killed after he lost control of his motorcycle in Rootstown early Wednesday evening.

Kelly Brewster, of 3222 Brady Lake Road, was killed in the crash after he lost control of his 2007 Suzuki motorcycle while driving westbound on Herriff Road just after 5 p.m.

Trooper Cory Harris of the Ravenna Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol said the crash is under investigation.

“Upon approaching a sharp left curve in the road, (less than a half-mile north of Sandy Lake Road) he attempted to reduce speed, slid and went off the right side of the road,” Harris said. “He overturned and struck a tree as he was ejected (from the motorcycle).”

Brewster was wearing a helmet, and there were no other vehicles involved.

“Witnesses saw him traveling up and down the roadway, and reported he was a traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the accident,” said Harris. He said there is a 15 mph caution sign at the location of the crash.

Brewster was transported by the Rootstown Fire Department to Robinson Memorial Hospital, and was later transported to Akron City Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The toxicology report is pending.

With the onset of the Fourth of July holiday weekend, Harris said he wants to warn motorists to drive with caution and to obey traffic laws.
