I've always believed the Garrettsville school district to be an excellent one. Not only do we have great educators and support staff that are willing to go above and beyond to help or children, but the entire administration has always had the welfare of our kids and community at the forefront of the daily tasks and duties of operating our schools on such a high level.
I can't help but wonder why so many things that I would concider inappropriate for a high school are happening this year! Our new principal (this is only his second year at GHS) didn't allow any parents to chapperone the Homecoming dance this year. He only wanted faculty members as chaperones. This would be fine if there were enough chaperones present, but only five faculty members and one spouse were there that I know of. Not quite enough adult supervision for close to 400 kids! No wonder the punch that was being served got spiked! Which is worse people-the fact that the punch got spiked or the fact the the principal did nothing about it? No police officers were called and neither were any parents. Once it was discovered it was quickly thrown out and another batch of punch quickly took its place. Anyone that bothered to question about the rumors of the punch on the following Monday were quickly told that the rumors weren't true. Why take chances? How could the principal not do anything? Glad my child wasn't driving home that nite!
I guess that the Mardi Gras themed Homecoming was such a success at promoting the party attidude that a new fundraiser is in the works. Our wonderful principal thinks it is okay for our kids to pay to participate in Jello Wrestling to raise money for some of our school associated groups. I am totally appalled at the thought of this. Why not just load all of our kids up on the buses and take them downtown to Slim and Jumbo's or one of the other local bars in town and let them all party for a few hours? At least that way we would know that they would have safe transportation. How can a reasonably intelligent, educated individual even invision this being age appropriate?
People of this community need to call and voice their opinions and outrage not only to Mr. Malmisur (high school principal), but also to Mr. Klamer (school superintendant), and current members of the school board. There's nothing wrong with our kids having a good time, but some things should not be allowed in a high school environment.
