The Kent State University New Music Ensemble will present its first concert of the season at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Carl F. Ludwig Recital Hall of the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music on the Kent campus.

Under the direction of Dr. Frank Wiley, professor of composition and an internationally performed composer, assisted by Krystal Young, students of the School of Music will perform music of the last half of the 20th century and recently composed music of this century.

Contemporary musicians represented include Larry Baker of Cleveland, whose "Rainmusic" will be performed by Courtney Lambert, marimba soloist. An expanded version of this piece will have a second performance using five marimbas and two pianos.

Two women composers, Shulamit Ran and Jennifer Higdon, and Frederic Rzweski will be represented in a solo flute piece (by Ran) and small chamber ensembles (by Higdon and Rzweski) in various combinations of flute, piccolo, Glockenspiel, violin, clarinet, alto saxophone, English horn, bass, piano and percussion.

Now considered one of the "titans" of 20th century music, Luciano Berio's virtuoso "Sequenza III" will be performed by soprano Susan Fletcher. She will also perform as soloist accompanied by five instrumentalists in Berio's "O King."

A new music concert is an opportunity hear "classical" music of the time and cutting-edge musical developments.

This event is free and open to the public.
