"Hungry" in Ravenna

As you know most people lost power in Ravenna this week, but what you probably don't know is a lot of people are going hungry due to the power outage. Numerous senior citizens and low and middle class families have had to throw away their refrigeated items. Many of these families are on food stamps and fixed incomes and cannot afford to replace their food. I beg you to please donate to the Center of Hope, Christian Cupboard, American Red Cross of Portage County, Salvation Army, and any other food bank or nonprofit organization that can help these people. This may not look like a crisis because their houses are still standing and lights may be back on, but there are hungry people out there.

That IS a fabulous ministry! We have donated there a few times. You give the $30 and they buy the food for a needy family. Thanks for reminding me about it because it's been a while. I'll call tomorrow and make a donation. From the sounds of things on this message board people need their food replaced that they lost during the power outage.

This is an excellent site - Angel Food Ministries. You pay $30.00 for a week's worth of food - and check out the menu!! I think this is also a worthwhile charity to donate to for those of us able to at this time. http://www.angelfood...en.asp

Maybe then, if this happens again, they should start some sort of cooler and ice drive for those who can't afford them. (Don't they have coolers at the dollar store though? Ice is only a few bucks as well.) It would also be a nice idea to cook all of the food that might go bad and have a party. If it's going to go bad anyway at least you've fed a few people and had some fun as well.

Thank you, everyone! I will pass this info on to my family members and make a few calls for them. It is nice to know that there are still helpful people out there!

If you have home owners insurance or renters insurance look into your plan. Mine covered food loss. Hope this might help.

Center of Hope does offer hot meals but also is a food pantry. I believe they will help most people as they are an emergency food pantry, but most of it is non perishable. I do not know of many people who have enough coolers to put all their food into. I know we have about $600.00 worth of meat in our freezer, and could not have accommodated that in coolers. Also, ice can get pretty pricey for people who have little money to spare as it is.
It is nice to see so many people trying to reach out to others in need.

I believe most of these places would help families that make just over the standard, It would not hurt to contact any of these agencies. They may be offering special assitance for families that make a little to much money but lost all their food. 330-297-3750 is a number for the county that might be able to help, not positive about though. I'll try and come up with some better info tommorrow.
