At tonight's school board meeting, the most senior of all the board members prompted himself to ask for a motion to re-affirm the 1.0 GPA that is required by student-athletes in our district. Being the most senior member on the board, he was obviously irritated at the junior member's new business remarks that the GPA standard for student athletes needs to be reviewed.
Currently, Waterloo allows a student to have a straight 'D' average and continue to be eligible for sports. I am curious to hear from any community member who thinks that a 1.0 GPA is acceptable in the eyes of our school for our athletes to participate in a 'privilege'(d) activity.
To all community members who read this and were not at the meeting; words cannot describe to you the non-verbal crap that went on (and goes on) at the meeting(s). For a SB Member to basically attempt to make a motion to re-confirm a GPA for athletes that currently exists, is nothing but an excersie in futility.
Finally, to the senior member of the SB - your non-fact based conclusions in conjunction with your apparent non-verbal communication is so obvious that it is palpable. I am appalled at the way you treated the Board President tonight as well as your fellow board members and how you continue to belittle the community for being sub-par in terms of median income.
Sorry u hung urself tonight BP - don't know if u realized it or not. Less is more.

Also, do not give up. Start asking for Itemized expense reports and revenue reports, ask for a copy of the teachers union contract and see if the have the school policy posted on a web site for all to view.
Stay involved and be part of the local districts education and the children that attend. We are ALL stewards of the children in many ways.
Don't give up. There will be many boring meetings and each one will probably reveal something you didn't know before.
Communities should highly involved in making sure children come first and their education comes first.
We have to make sure that all students have the same opportunity as the next and that we can give them all they need to help them make it after graduating.
Remember that School Board members are the representavives of the community that we voted into that position. Their decisions should be based on what the community feels the students needs are and look over all recommendations made by the supterintendant and not be so ready to vote yes on anything the Super recommends.
This is why they have old business and new business, but rarely do you see any old business.
Everything the Super throws at them is usually approved without taking the time or patience to review everything.
Sometimes it is rushed and the community and students pay for it later.

Stryker,
Rather than have everyone meet at a new location, get more people to attend the school board meeting. You could see if you can ask the school board questions during the meeting then afterwards, ask the people who attended to stay and have your meeting then. It is your school district and the district should not have any problem with you speaking with others in the community in the school building you pay taxes on.
They most likely let other organizations have meetings there just like our district does. What better opportunity to meet with the community than right after a school board meeting.
Just a suggestion.

It would be interesting to know the education level of each of the board members, I have a feeling it is minimal due to decisions they make. A gpa of 1.0 is very low but what is more disturbing is how they have lowered the grading scale to 100-90 A, 89-80 B, 79-70 C, 69-60 D, 59F. If you have a 1.0 you may not have a pulse, especially with the rigorous curriculum that exist at the high school. Colleges look at act/sat scores, not gpa so your not helping out the students.
How about a student who gets a 90%A, he/she receives the same letter grade as the student who gets 100%. Both receive 4pts on the gpa scale. You will have 15-20 Valedictorian at your graduation.
It's a shame anyone can run for Board, there needs to be qualifications set in Ohio for this position.

If you know this is going on why did you drop your kids off there, or better yet call the sheriff if this is going on. This would probably explain why are football team is 0-3.

These kids should have to have a 2.0 or higher grade point average and be drug tested. Oh but wait, if the kids were drug tested we wouldn't have much of a football team. Have any of you parents ever dropped you kids off at a party on Basset Road and came back to check on your kids later in the night? If not, maybe you should. Half of the kids there are on the football team and drunk and stoned to. While the parents sit in the house. To top it off, the mother is a bus driver for Waterloo.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE AND DRUG TEST.

I say it is time for the community to get together and decide what they actually want. I think both sides should get together. By this I mean, those who are for the present board and those who are against the board. After all, isn't all of this for the kids? Even after all of my kids are through the school system I feel it would be my civic duty to make sure that the upcoming kids are taken care of. We need a board who's sole interest is taking care of the districts problems and ensuring a future for the children. Now, I am not saying that the current board is not doing this but, there are some issues that are not getting resolved. All who read this, would you be interested in attending a meeting at the community center one evening?

you make a very good point stryker.
i am also sad to see so many running - just worried about the diluted vote. It makes me nervous that our school will remain in the same situation for another 2 years at least.
Does having a public meeting of school board candidates ONLY prior to the "candidates" night that is normally held, beneficial? We should organize it and allow the candidates to speak as well as allowing the community to ask questions of the candidates and in general about the current state of our schools.
