I had to write regarding the "Question Coaches" in Friday Sept.,11 paper. I know that their are some parents that are not happy with our teams coaches, but I think it needs to be said, our coaches are good coaches. Our head coach took that postion because our first head coach had to quit for personal reasons. Our head coach is coaching for the kids. My son has been on the team for 3 years now and he doesn't have a dad or any other family member coaching and he plays quite a bit. The more expereince you have the more you play. We have 33 boys on our team and the coaches try to get everyone in sometimes its hard. No matter if you play for Ravenna or Kent or anywhere else the boys play hard to win. Yes we do want to teach the boys to play the game, but we also want to win the game. We aren't tring to be unfair. I just wanted people to know that we do have good coaches I think our coaches deserve that.
Thanks,
One of many football moms

I have always felt that the games needed to be longer in Pee Wee Football in order to let more kids play. I believe some of the leagues have very short quarters (7 or 8 minutes long). Some leagues have longer (10 to 12 minutes), but the clock runs continuous. Pay attention to how many plays each team runs on average. There is very little time and very few opportunities for every kid to get into the game. I have seen some kids play as little as 1 series or even 1 play before time ran out in the game.
I know it is very difficult to find volunteers to make more of a commitment than they already have, but maybe it is time to look at how the game can be improved to involve more kids. Either have longer quarters or more games. Why not play twice a week, with one of the games designated for "second" string players. My father (who coached youth football for over 30 years) would schedule an off night game with a team outside of our league for all the kids who didn't play on a regular basis during the season. Those kids actually got to play under the lights during the week!!
Have your coaches call around to other leagues that may have the same issues your league is having. I am sure they would love to have more kids play in more games.

hill5 Yes there should have been 2 teams. However, if the other schools don't have 2 teams then you are still in the same position. It is very easy for spectators to sit and judge what goes on on the playing field, whatever sport. But, until you have actually taken on the role as "coach" you don't get the full impact of how hard it is. Some of the teams you face are huge in comparison, and if a child doesn't get much playing time, well, that is because of safety. We do try to get all the kids in the game. Not easy. Believe it or not there are some kids when told to go in, tell the coaches "no, i don't want to play right now". Sometimes the picture isn't always what it seems. And sometimes we as parents need to sit back and let the coaches do what they need to do. As the player gets older they need to step up to the plate. In big boy sports you need to earn your position. Unfortunately, the original coach had an ego bigger than his mouth, and instead of sending some of the first year players back he kept them on making it harder for the coaches that had to step in. Before judging someone on how they do things, try on their shoes and see if they fit.

You aren't complaining because your son is playing. Just wait until there comes a day when your son sits the bench after being a starter for 3 years and the pre-season. I guarantee you will be singing a different tune!! Then you will all of a sudden probably feel the need to kiss their a**. As for me..I have a "talk" with the coaches. There is no reason in peewee football that all the kids dont play. And with 33...shouldn't they make 2 teams!!!

I have been considered by many to be a football nut. I love to watch kids play football, high school, and even college. I even taught football for a few years. I learned from my experiences that it is hard to please all the parents. I say, let the kids play. They can teach us adults some lessons. Thank you for writing a positive memo.
