Deerfield Fire Department was called to a report of a garage fire Saturday January 23, at 5:04PM.
The garage was located at 2547 Route 14 in the northwest portion of the Township.

Chester Donnell reported that he was working on a fuel pump built into a vehicle gasoline tank and touched it to a car battery to check if it was working. It was working, and a spark from the battery ignited the gasoline causing a flash fire in the garage.

Eleven members of the fire department responded to the call and the majority were held at the fire station after the dispatcher advised the first responding fire vehicle that the owner thought he had the fire out.

Fortunately Mr. Donnell had a fire extinguisher nearby and was able to extinguish the fire. Firefighters checked the area with an infrared camera to assure no excessive heat remained that would indicate a hidden fire in spaces like the walls.

There was no loss to the structure and Mr. Donnell indicated he did not plan on filing any insurance claim.
