VERMONT - at the Canadian-American National Weightlifting Championships on Aug. 16, Nick Apseloff set two new world records in the bench press for the 14 to 15 year old age group and 181-pound class.
Apseloff is the grandson of Stan Apseloff of Kent. He is the son of Kent Roosevelt High School graduate Roy Apseloff.
Apseloff broke the world record recognized by both the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and the 100% Raw Powerlifting Federations, bench pressing 320.77 pounds.
The 100% Raw Powerlifting Federation prohibits the use of lifting suits, straps, wraps and both federations drug test competitors.
Apseloff began weightlifting with his father in 2004 as part of a physical therapy program after he broke both arms and a collarbone in a recreational accident.
His initial goal was just to recover, but instead he kept improving. In 2007 he entered his first bench press competition and not only won, but set a world record.
Since then, Apseloff has set world records in every bench press competition he has entered.
World record bench press attempts require three international certified judges and calibrated weights, resulting in odd amounts when translated into pounds. Last month, Apseloff won a gold medal in the AAU Junior Olympics, which were held in Detroit.
In his division, Apseloff broke the long-standing AAU world record of 300 pounds, with a lift of 311.97 for his age group.
The AAU is one of the oldest and largest athletic federations in the United States. It was founded in 1888 and boasts more than 500,000 members.
