Staff report
NORWICH, Conn. - The Akron Aeros built a commanding lead through 81,2 innings of play on Wednesday, then nearly watched the entire thing melt away in a thrilling ninth-inning comeback by the Connecticut Defenders.
The lead for Akron stood at 9-2 heading into the Defenders' last at-bats. However, Connecticut then plated four runs to cut its deficit to only 9-6.
The four runs were scored against Akron All-Star closer Randy Newsom. Then, Scott Roehl was brought into the game to close the door with the final two outs, and the Aeros escaped with a much-needed win.
Picking up the win on the mound for Akron was J.D. Martin. Martin's record improved to an impressive 10-3 on the season, and his earned-run average dipped to 2.64.
With the win, along with a victory by Bowie on Wednesday, the Aeros remain three games back in the standings of the Baysox in the South Division of the Eastern League.
Offensively, the night belonged to Stephen Head for the Aeros, who sent three baseballs over the fence for the home run hat trick.
Head hit a two-run homer in the fourth, a solo shot in the fifth and then another solo round-tripper in the seventh. His four RBIs on the night pushed his season total to 46. Brandon Pinckney, Matt Whitney and Damaso Espino each collected multiple hits for the Aeros.
