WINDHAM - The Windham Bombers came within inches and seconds of springing a major upset in the Portage Trail Conference County Division Friday night.
Division co-leader Streetsboro escaped with a 64-63 victory on Marty Hill Court to maintain an unblemished 5-0 division mark, as Dan Spindler's free throw with 11.3 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner.
After trailing by as many as 11 points, the Bombers held the Rockets to only seven points in the fourth quarter and missed the potential game-winning shot as the buzzer sounded.
"Thank goodness for experience," said a happy and relieved Rockets coach Todd Muckleroy following the thriller. "Any time you come into this place and win it's like stealing something. Windham already had two division losses, and this was one of their windows of opportunity (to get back in the race). They really play hard."
Streetsboro (8-1, 5-0 PTC County) jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter, and the defending County Division champions appeared to have the evening under control.
Robert Wilson quickly showed the Windham crowd why he was the PTC County Division Player of the Year last season. The 6-foot-4 guard drove the baseline and dished off to teammate Carrington Hanna for an assist on Streetsboro's first possession, scored on a baseline layup, then came back with a tip-in.
After Hanna and Rico Smith tossed in a pair of 3-pointers, Wilson drilled a 3 from the wing and Streetsboro led 21-9.
Wilson finished the night with 25 points, 14 rebounds, three steals and four assists. Hanna also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Malcolm Brooks scored 13 points and pulled down six boards.
But Windham (4-4, 2-3) suddenly came back in the second quarter and took the lead as Clayton Ridenbaugh (14 points, four 3-pointers) found his 3-point range.
By the time the first half ended both teams had scored 11 3s. The lead changed hands three times and the game was tied three times before Streetsboro emerged with a 42-40 halftime advantage.
The Rockets pushed the lead to 57-48 lead after three quarters, then Hanna hit a jumper for a 59-48 lead.
The Bombers' thrilling fourth-quarter comeback was keyed in part by 5-foot-5 Cody Washington, who played much bigger than his size. He had four steals on the night and always seemed to be making plays on loose balls.
The first three Windham baskets in the fourth quarter all came on putbacks, first from senior Cody Apthorpe and then a pair by sophomore Derris Hunt.
Apthorpe then hit Hunt with an outlet pass off a rebound for a fastbreak basket, and the lead was down to only five points. Rico Hall, who had 11 points, then hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 61-59.
Wilson hit a pair of free throws, but Apthorpe countered with another putback. With only 42 seconds left on the clock, Hall drove the paint and scored to tie the game at 63-63.
Apthorpe hit for 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Also finishing with a double-double was Hunt, who piled up 10 points and 11 rebounds in his best effort of the season.
Both teams had opportunities from the charity stripe but could not take advantage. Streetsboro was only 5-of-16, while Windham was 3-of-13 from the line.
"The kids gave a great effort. I can't fault that. But you can't shoot that kind of percentage from the foul line in a big game like this," said Windham veteran coach Marty Hill.
"They have a lot of weapons, and when they race up and down the floor they can make some shots. I thought we did a good job late when we switched to man, but things just didn't bounce our way."

No mention of the Bomber fans on our side, didn't know it was against the law to sit on the bomber side. What has the so called "riot" have to do with this basketball game????It was 5 kids fighting and I am sure that doesn't happen in Windham? As for having it wrong maybe I didn't have the view you did but you certainly didn't have the view I did either! Your son may be respectful but not every Windham player is, just as not every Boro player may be. Let's be real. Good Luck to the Bombers for the rest of the season. I sincerely wish you the best Mom.

It1166 I'm sorry but you have it wrong. I was at the game sitting directly behind your team's bench. I actually talked to your coach's wife. She was setting with her family right in front of me. She was embarrassed by a few of your students. I guess you missed a couple of your fans coming over to the Windham bleachers with their signs talking rudely to our spectators. They were actually asked to leave our stands & return to the Boro side by the two police officers. Not only did they not do what was asked of them, they were very rude to the officers. Maybe you were at the concession stand during that time. I didn't say it was all of your fans, but a few will ruin it for all. As far as Windham goes we have always been treated as the bad apple of the league. It seems to me the Boro had a riot at their school last year. I have several friends who live in the Boro & have sent their kids to Kent for open enrollment. There are problems everywhere. I know what I saw at the game Friday night. You didn't see the play where your player kicked our player in the head (on purpose)? You didn't see the two police officers approach the official about not making the call? You didn't see that offical call a time out for the Boro when there was a loose ball that neither team had control of? You didn't see the same official run out of the gym before the final whistle was blown? If you didn't see that you then you weren't watching the same game that I was watching. As a parent of one of the Bomber players I have taught my son to be respectfull on & off the court. If he doesn't agree with a call, keep your mouth shut & keep playing. Leave it on the court. I am not making excuses as to why we lost. We should have hit our foul shots. I did say in my earlier post that the Boro does have a talented team. I wouldn't take that away from them. However, you don't have to be nasty when you play. I never said that you couldn't bring signs in to cheer your team on. However keep them in your stands. You don't come to the other teams stands, shove your signs in their faces & talk rudely to adult spectators. If that's how these students act out in public I would hate to see how they act at home. I am a proud parent of a Windham Bomber & proud to live in Windham. I hate to tell you but this little town has some of the best people living here. I don't care what you or anyone else thinks of me or Windham. I am a proud to be a Bomber!

danzmom, Boro has class less fans? you should check yourself and listen to what all the county teams say about the unsportmanlike fans. OHSAA rules state signs are allowed if they are not negative. "Go Rockets" is not negative, no one took any Windham sign down, sorry we have such supportive fans but didn't you guys have an all out brawl on the floor against Rootstown??? Yes I am sure it is all the other teams in the league never Windhams fault. You certainly would not have been treated like that in the Boro. We don't care if you cheer for your team in our house. The game is played on the court not in the stands. It is not against the rules to cheer. It is just a game. Trust me the Boro fans were not treated very well for just cheering on their team.

As far as high school athletics go, there is always poor oficiating, so just get used to it. It happens to everyone. I wish that the officials would get every call right, but its just too tough to get eveything right, with, in basketball, three officials watching over ten players and the coaches of the teams. Its just too hard.

Tessio - why don't you grow up. I didn't say that the Bombers lost because of poor officiating. We should have hit our foul shots. However, with that being said the officiating was very poor. It's pretty bad that the police officers working the game had to point out to the official that one of the Streetsboro players kicked a Windham player in the head. I don't have a problem with letting the kids play, but there is no reason to be so nasty. I am ashamed that Streetsboro has to act like that. I do feel that they are a very talented team, but if they were half as respectful they would be dangerous. You don't come into someone's gym & rip signs down & put up your own signs. You don't go on the home teams side & cause trouble. Have some class. The Rockets are not undeafted. They have lost a game. They came into Windham thinking that they were going to blow us out of the gym & that just didn't happen. Yes they have some talent, but any team can be beaten. I have a son that plays for Windham & I would much rather have him lose with dignity than win & act like a jerk.

It's what you bring at game time that matters. Seen the best teams lose by missing easy baskets when it mattered. Also have seen 1 or 2 bad calls change a game in less than 4 minutes. Talent or no talent. Both teams were good.
But the "grow up folks" comment..very mature.

of course it had to be poor officiating... not the fact that the rockets are undefeated and stacked with talent haha grow up folks

A very tough loss. The Bombers played very well. They played as a team. Keep your head up guys you have nothing to be ashamed of. Once again poor officiating.
