By Chuck Condley Record-Courier staff writer The Mogadore Red Sox exploded for eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to break open a close game on the way to a 15-3 five-inning victory over the Ravenna Cardinals in first round action in the Ravenna Hot Stove District Baseball Tournament at Volunteer Park on Saturday. Leading 4-3, the Red Sox took advantage of wildness by three different Ravenna pitchers in the fourth inning to break the game open. Five straight walks to open the inning resulted in the first two runs of the inning while a fielder’s choice plated the third. With two outs and the bases loaded, Matthew Holes ripped a triple to make it 10-3 and then scored on a wild pitch. The final run of the inning came on another bases-loaded walk before the Cardinals finally got out of the inning. Ravenna had a rally going in the bottom of the fourth after a single by Daniel Grace and a hit-batsman. But Mogadore got out the inning as winning pitcher Chandler Wieland got the next batter to hit into an unassisted double play by the first baseman. The Red Sox then put the game away with three runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of walks and an RBI single by Trent Yoho, and consecutive bases-loaded hit batsman. Mogadore jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on a one-out triple by Nate Shannon, RBI single by Yoho and Holes and a pair of wild pitches. Ravenna came back with three runs in the bottom of the first on a leadoff single by Logan Williams and a pair of walks which loaded the bases. A hit-batsman brought home one run and a two out single by R.J. Kelly plated two more. After the first inning, Ravenna pitcher Nick Tirpak settled down and struck out six of the next seven batters he faced. Holes started on the mound for the Red Sox and went the first two inning, striking out five, including fanning the side in the second. Wieland came on in the third for Mogadore and threw shut out ball the rest of the game, striking out six, and giving up only one hit, a fourth inning single to Daniel Grace. The Red Sox advance to face the top-seeded Lake White Sox in a noon game at Ravenna’s City Park.
