Staff report

MASSILLON — What started out as a rout turned into a slugfest, but it all worked out in the end for the Garfield Mets on Sunday at Massillon Perry High School.

After taking leads of 10-0 and 15-2, the Mets watched as Tuslaw clawed back into the game and cut its deficit to 15-10, before the Mets pulled away once again to win 21-10 and capture the EE League regional championship to advance to next weekend’s state tournament.

The Mets, who improved to 18-4 on the season, will play the Lorain Saints next Saturday at 3 p.m. at Butler-Rodman Park’s Field 1 in Alliance.

The Mets started quickly Sunday, taking a 2-0 lead on three hits in the first inning, then exploding for eight more runs on seven hits in the second inning to go up 10-0.

With the score 10-2, Garfield tacked on five runs in the sixth inning for a commanding 15-2 advantage and the rout seemed to be on.

However, in the bottom of the inning, Tuslaw’s bats came alive to the tune of eight runs crossing the plate, and suddenly Garfield’s lead was reduced to 15-10.

But the Mets were far from finished, scoring six insurance runs on six hits in the seventh inning to cement the victory.

Leading the hit parade for Garfield were Mike Cook (triple, 3 singles), Grant Weiss (double, 3 singles), Vince Formes (single, 2 RBI), Brett Jones (double, 2 singles) and Austin Click (2 singles).

Kyle Bolton and Robert Altemus combined for the win on the mound.
