BLUFFTON — Former Crestwood star Jess Cowan scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Bluffton University 79-67 on Wednesday night in a non-conference game at Founders Hall in Bluffton. With the loss, the Terriers fall to 0-2 overall while the Beavers open the season at 1-0. Both teams exchanged leads in the early minutes of the first half, but a 9-2 scoring run by Bluffton gave the Beavers a seven-point lead, 20-13, with 9:18 left in the opening period. Bluffton extended its lead to 10 points, 29-19, at the 6:11 mark, but a 5-1 run by Hiram capped by a pair of free throws by freshman forward Amanda Petrusky cut the deficit to single figures, 30-24, with 4:13 left in the half. Bluffton answered with a 7-2 run of its own to extend its lead back to double digits at 37-26. Hiram sophomore point guard Kelsey Durichko connected on a jumper that sparked a 7-0 run to get the Terriers to within four points, 37-33, with 25 seconds remaining.The Beavers tallied the final bucket of the half and took a 39-33 lead into halftime. Bluffton quickly regained a double-figure lead by scoring the first five points of the second half, and maintained a 10-point plus lead for the majority of the second half. Hiram made one last charge late in the period and got to within five points, 58-53, as part of a 7-2 run that ended with a layup by sophomore guard Tiffany Shields with 6:36 left in the game. But Bluffton took control of the game with a 14-4 run to reach its largest margin of the game of 15 points, 72-57, with 1:23 remaining en route to the 79-67 final. Bluffton shot an impressive 58.0 percent (29-of-50) from the floor and was led by Ginny Buckingham and Kim Miller, who each scored a game-tying high 18 points. Miller also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and Buckingham added 11 boards. Vicki Auer scored 15 points and Brittany Lewis rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Beavers with 13 points. Hiram shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor and had three players score in double digits, led by senior forward Alex Dellas,who tallied 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting (62.5 percent). Shields was also in double figures with 10 points.
