Magazu is finale's likely QB starter for KSU

Anthony Magazu is the likely starter Friday when Kent State hosts Buffalo in the regular-season finale at Dix Stadium.

Golden Flashes head coach Doug Martin did not confirm the decision during his Monday press conference, but he said he is leaning towards Magazu in part because he is a senior and Friday will mark his final game at Kent State.

Sophomore Giorgio Morgan is also expected to see some action. The former starter was 0-for-6 with a fumble and an interception returned for a touchdown in three series after relieving the injured Spencer Keith in Saturday’s loss at Temple.

“Anthony Magazu and Giorgio Morgan will obviously play,” said Martin. “That’s really all we have left right now. We have Sal Battles who is being redshirtted right now, and I’d hate to use his redshirt in one game.”

Martin said he will make a final decision based on “whoever is taking care of the ball the best and not turning the ball over” during a short week of practice.

Assuming the choice is Magazu, Kent State would continue its trend of starting three different quarterbacks per season because of injuries at the position during the Doug Martin era.

That has been just about the the average in Martin’s six seasons.

“You look across the country, Oklahoma can’t win without their starting quarterback, and right on down the line. Name a team,” said Martin. “We’ve had to do it every single year. We overcame it in 2006 a little bit when (Julian) Edelman missed a couple of games and we still got six wins.

“It’s frustrating, but there is really nothing you can do about it,” Martin said. “You just have to try to go on. And ours have been severe injuries for the most part. Edelman with a broken arm. We’ve had broken collar bones. Spencer’s is a pretty good separation of the shoulder.”

KSU quarterbacks haven’t been sacked an inordinate amount, “which is strange,” Martin said. “Our quarterbacks don’t take a major beating, but they haven’t been able to stay healthy for whatever reason.”

INJURY UPDATE, PART 1 — The grade-three shoulder separation Keith suffered Saturday at Temple should be healed in time for the freshman to be ready to participate in spring practice.

“He should be full-go by the time kids get back here in January,” said Martin. “He should be able to go through winter conditioning, and then spring practice doesn’t start here until the beginning of March. He should have plenty of time to get ready for that.”

Keith completed a fine debut season with 2,147 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while completing 168 of his 294 passes (57.1 percent). He appeared in 10 games, starting six.

INJURY UPDATE, PART 2 — Chris Singletary spent only one day on crutches following knee surgery that should keep him away from Kent State’s men’s basketball team for between two and four weeks.

“He is walking and icing the knee, and he’s started stretching,” said Kent State men’s basketball head coach Geno Ford. “But he hasn’t done any strength work yet. We got really good news after the surgery. The (meniscus) tear was in the back of the knee, which is better than anywhere else. The trainers feel like, early, he is ahead of schedule.”

HOLT TO RETURN — Ford confirmed the return of true freshman point guard Randal Holt for Wednesday’s game at South Florida.

Holt was suspended “indefinitely” for a violation of team rules. Ford hoped that suspension would be just one game, Sunday’s 19-point win over Rochester College, but waited to make his decision based on a one-on-one meeting with the freshman on Monday.

“Randal practiced (on Monday), and he’ll play against South Florida,” said Ford. “He regrets making a poor choice, and he’s had some things he had to meet off the floor to be reinstated. He’s met those responsibilities, and he has been reinstated.”

CLAY COMMITS — Kent State keeps adding to its men’s basketball recruiting class for next season.

The Flashes received a verbal commitment from 6-foot-3 wing Deshawn Clay of Gary, Ind.

Clay earned a reputation as a sharp-shooter from long range during his career at Gary’s West Side High School. He is currently playing prep basketball at Christian Life Center Academy in Houston. For an advance look at Clay, search his name on YouTube.

KSU signed five new recruits last week. Clay can sign in April during the next signing period.
